RevealReviewField notes from twenty years of watching launches

How long before it pays?

Months rather than weeks, and it builds rather than arrives. Anyone quoting a shorter figure is describing an exception, and exceptions are shown precisely because they are exceptional.

The shape of it

A flat stretch where the work is real and nothing visible happens, then acceleration once enough exists for the platforms to place you. The shape catches people out because it looks identical to failure right up until it stops being.

Almost everyone who stops, stops during the flat part. That is the single most useful thing to know before starting.

Why the flat part exists

The systems distributing your content need enough of it, on a consistent subject, to work out who to show it to. Until that happens, reach is small and effectively random.

It is a mechanical constraint rather than a comment on quality, which is why publishing more of the same thing usually resolves it and publishing something different resets it.

What "compounds" actually means here

Work published in month one is still being found in month twelve, so each month's output adds to a stock rather than replacing it. Income follows the stock rather than the month's effort.

That is why the curve is flat then steep, and why stopping in month four forfeits far more than four months of work - it forfeits everything those four months would have earned across the following year.

What shortens it

  1. Narrowness. One specific subject gets categorised faster than a broad one. This is the largest lever and it costs nothing.
  2. Volume on that subject. Enough posts for the system to have data.
  3. Having something worth recommending from the start, so the traffic that does arrive early is not wasted.

What does not shorten it

Production quality, equipment, or a better opening line. Those matter later and they do not affect the placement problem at all, which is where the first months actually go.

People spend that period upgrading things that were never the constraint, which feels productive and postpones the thing that is.

What the first paid result usually looks like

Small, and from somewhere you did not predict. A single commission from a piece published weeks earlier on a subject you nearly abandoned is the common pattern.

It matters because people are waiting for a signal that looks like success and the real first signal looks like a rounding error. Recognising it for what it is keeps people going through the stretch where quitting is most likely.

The honest opinion

If you need money inside six weeks, this is the wrong route and freelancing a skill is the right one. This pays late and then keeps paying, which is a good trade for someone who can wait and a poor one for someone who cannot.

Being clear about which of those you are is worth more than any optimism about the timeline.
